Te Waka Unua School

The Brief

We were approached by two construction firms in Christchurch to price a redevelopment of the hard and soft landscapes around Te Waka Unua School in Woolston. We priced the tender from the designs of Kamomarsh (landscape architects) under the guidelines of the Ministry of Education (MOE). We could tell right from the start that this was going to be a major project, and one that would be a great for Evergreen. With our previous experience in playgrounds and landscaping schools, along with the MOE’s desire for a high standard of workmanship, in order to accommodate the rise of pupils over the last 5 years. We knew we were the perfect choice as the main contractor.

The Process

After winning the Tender through Watts and Hughes we realised we were the only contractor who would be working on this project. This was to our benefit as we were able to work closely with the Landscape Architects, MOE and the school itself. The job had a huge scope of works with a large variety of finishes including:

  • Artificial lawn mounds and play areas
  • Chess board paving
  • Musical instruments
  • 6m Totem pole climbing frame
  • 1km asphalt scooter track with timber ramps, stop and give way signage, concrete jumps and passing lanes
  • Coloured sports courts
  • We also completed over 300m2 of concrete surfaces- from exposed aggregate to a cover-Crete solution in a Poutama pattern.
  • Mega vegetable garden plots with climbing wires installed for growing a variety of everyday Vegetables.
  • Native garden beds

The Outcome

As seen in the photos everything came out looking spectacular. With everything going to plan, budget and timing we were thrilled with the outcome. We even finished the project well before the expected finish date, which meant the playground could be used by the pupils for the first day of the school year.

Bradley the site supervisor said, “It was a pleasure to bring the work together to a high finish result for the principal Janine and the pupils of Te Waka Unua”. The feedback we received from the school and MOE was very positive and they are looking forward to working with Evergreen on other projects to come. Overall, we enjoyed the challenge of the project and know that all the different elements of it will be enjoyed for many years to come!
